Click Here for VideoJune 16, 2022Founding father of Speedie & Associates, James A. Speedie, passed away peacefully on June 13th, 2022
It is with great sadness that I have to inform you that the founding father of our great Speedie & Associates family, James A. Speedie, passed away peacefully on the evening of June 13th, 2022.
Jim and Henrietta Speedie originally moved to Phoenix in 1977, in order to open a branch office for a consulting engineering firm based in Detroit Michigan, Halpert & Associates. At that time, Halpert was an active and growing firm, with a number of very talented young engineers led by an equally talented mentor and old-school geotechnical engineer, Hugo Halpert. Many of those young engineers would go on to great success, with several later becoming leaders of their own firms, including, as it turned out, Jim Speedie.
Prior to joining Halpert, Jim taught at his alma mater, Wayne State University, after getting his BSCE and MSCE degrees in Civil Engineering and Mathematics. After joining Halpert, a life-changing opportunity was presented to them, and Jim and Henrietta soon headed to the Great Warm Southwest, and Jim opened the Phoenix branch office of Halpert & Associates.
Halpert & Associates specialized in geotechnical engineering, construction inspection and materials testing, laboratory testing, and civil design and surveying. The early projects of the Phoenix branch office consisted of large shopping malls, including its first project, Paradise Valley Mall.
Jim Speedie began to build a small team of dedicated and hard-working individuals, and introduced a then-unique approach to serving an engineering firm's clients -an integrated philosophy of hands-on hard work, creative technical solutions, and superior customer service. These client-centric values remain at the core of our firm today.
Unfortunately, during the late 70's the economy turned, slowing construction. Hugo Halpert decided that the Phoenix market could not sustain a branch office, and wanted to pull out. However, Jim, along with Henrietta, saw the great growth potential in the Phoenix market and decided to stay and wait out the storm and continue to build and nurture the local relationships that Jim had already begun to develop. In addition, their two children, Leslie and Michael, had already begun to consider Arizona their home, and the climate, and the small-but-growing town of Phoenix was much more favorable for family life compared to urban Michigan.
So, in a remarkable leap of faith - not to mention at great personal financial risk - in July 1980 Jim and Henrietta made the bold step of purchasing the Phoenix branch office assets from Halpert & Associates, and forming Speedie & Associates. Thence began an incredible journey, a story of great personal and professional growth, not only for Jim and Henrietta, but for all of those along the way who have been part of that adventure in one way or another.
And the rest, as they say, is history.
Jim - and to those who knew him well it was always 'Speedie' - and Henrietta spent 20 years building Speedie & Associates into a firm that exemplified the core values that Jim always held dear. But it was time for them to step away, to enjoy life, grandkids, and the success they had achieved and deserved. Upon their retirement in 2001, the four new owners of the firm - all long-time employees, three from the Halpert days - were extremely proud to carry on Jim's legacy.
In retirement, Speedie continued to enjoy life the way he always had - full speed ahead. He loved life, and people, and cats, and having a good time. Jim relished building relationships, having fun with old friends and making new ones. He, and his second wife Lisa, regularly talked of building a house near the beach in Central/South America.
During retirement, Jim also continued to give back to the local community, including tutoring those less fortunate, and inspiring them to be something he knew they could be - but that they hadn't quite realized yet.
Speedie always seemed to have that ability, to spot that certain something in someone that they didn't know they had. That in fact was the very foundation of my professional relationship with Jim. At a time in my life when I was completely lost, he - with my brother's indemnification, no doubt - provided an opportunity to me, in a career field I knew nothing about. Jim always - well, almost always - gave me the benefit of the doubt, and always just enough rope to hang myself. Which I did on a regular basis. But Speedie knew that's how we learn, and grow, and realize our full potential. Professionally, I am who I am today in great part due to Jim Speedie giving me that room to grow.
There's probably a million great memories and stories about Jim Speedie, and I'm hoping that many of these will get shared amongst us over the coming days. If people remember you, you're never really gone.
Rest in peace Speedie.
- Brett Creaser

Speedie & Associates, Inc, a leader in geotechnical, environmental and construction mate- rials testing consulting engineering services statewide, celebrated 20 years in Flagstaff with a Charity BBQ for clients, vendors and employees as a thank you for its continued growth and success. The theme was "mining for gold" with attendees gold panning for prizes, a tour of the facility and whole pig BBQ provided by local restaurant Bigfoot Bar-B-Q.
In addition, to give back to the community, S&A contributed $5 for each attendee who came to the event. S&A is proud to provide the United Flagstaff Fire Fighters IAFF Local 1505 Charities with a check for $500.00. We were fortunate to have four of our brave local firefighters also attend the event and be treated to a sumptuous BBQ meal before having to rush out on a call. In keeping with the "local" flavor of the event, keg beer was also provided by Lumberyard Brewery.
Twenty years ago, Speedie & Associates officially opened its Flagstaff office and materials laboratory primarily of- fering QA/QC and Construction Materials Testing services for heavy highway and civil work in Northern Arizona.
As recognition of our Flagstaff office grew among Speedie's existing clientele, so did requests for additional ser- vices, including geotechnical, environmental and materials testing for commercial work in Northern Arizona. Due in part to a small local staff and limited laboratory capabilities, this work was primarily managed out of the Phoenix office. As a result of the increased demand, Speedie & Associates decided, as a part of its overall strategic plan- ning, to expand the Flagstaff office to "stand alone" in its ability to provide the same services as the Phoenix office. To do so included hiring a committed staff of experts and support personnel as well as ensuring that the materialslaboratory was sufficiently outfitted with all the necessary equipment to provide local testing services. Today the Flagstaff office maintains a highly qualified staff of 10 +/- qualified personnel (including 2 professional registrants), is managed by a dedicated Regional Manager, Clay Spencer, R.G. who is a local Flagstaff resident and who has been with the Speedie family for over 25 years, and has a completely operational materials testing laboratory facili- ty to fully service the Northern Arizona region.
Company Sr. Vice President and CFO, Brett Creaser, said "Speedie & Associates 20th anniversary in Flagstaff is a tremendous milestone for the company." "With over 34 years of statewide Arizona experience, to be regionally recognized as a local leader in our field is the ultimate compliment. There are many factors which have contributed to this success, underlying them all is a steadfast commitment to meet our customers' needs and which has car- ried us through challenging economic times, Creaser continued."
Speedie & Associates, Inc. was established in Phoenix, Arizona in 1980. As one of Arizona's few, locally owned specialty engineering firms, Speedie offers a highly qualified statewide staff of 120+ professional engineers, regis- tered geologists, field and laboratory technicians and support personnel. In addition to its Flagstaff office - which was established in 1994 - Speedie maintains additional office and laboratory facilities in its Phoenix Corporate of- fice location and in Tucson, Arizona. Each office is managed by an experienced Branch Manager - local to the specific area - and is fully staffed and equipped to provide geotechnical investigations, construction materials testing, laboratory testing, special structural and architectural inspection, environmental engineering and site as- sessments, asbestos inspections, forensic analyses of problem sites and specialized testing services, including floor flatness testing, embedded anchor pull-out testing and GPR scanning of concrete and masonry. As a recog- nized leader throughout the State, Speedie & Associates is consistently ranked as one of Arizona's top engineering firms and is proud to have been ranked No. 1 in Ranking Arizona for 10 years in a row.
